ONE, THREE, AND FIVE DAY WORKSHOPS

Mon-Wed, Nov. 9-11, 2015 – Noon-5pm  – Drawing and/or Painting in French Court Tradition

Slide Presentation of “A Brief History of Botanical Art”

Students enthralled by the discovery of detail will find Botanical Art an amazing art genre and a huge boon to executing better-drawn plant images. Students will concentrate on one subject to develop drawing and or watercolor skills in the classical tradition. Learn the pencil and watercolor techniques in the style of the French Court. Understand the importance of Gesture, Contour, and Key Element Exercises and explore the Five Elements of Geometric Form. No experience is necessary. Students who wish to watercolor are welcome to bring their paints and brushes. Instructor will provide Subject, Syllabus, Drawing Materials, Paper, Boards.  Materials Fee of $30 is payable to instructor in class.

Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 -10am-5pm – Replicating the Botanical Art of French Court Masters

Beginners are welcome to attend and learn the easy ten-step method to drawing. Advanced students will work with Master Botanical Art pieces, replicate them, learn their compositional secrets, and apply their news skills in graphite, colored pencil, or watercolor. Students who wish to work with colored pencils or watercolor are welcome to bring their own colored pencils, paints and brushes. Instructor will provide Subject, Syllabus, Drawing Materials, Paper, Boards.  Materials Fee of $25 is payable to instructor in class.

Mon-Wed, Jan. 11-13, 2016 – Noon-5pm – Botanical Whimsy-Creations in Ink & Watercolor

Stretch your imagination!  Illustrate an original drawing that demonstrates a delightful and charming use of plant or garden life. Incorporate colored paper, colored inks, colored pencil, ink wash, and/or watercolor in your design. To help unleash your imagination for original and whimsical garden characters, browse children’s books, comic books, cartoons, and/or greeting cards and bring your inspiration to this fun workshop! Students are to bring their colored pencils, inks and ink pens, and/or watercolor supplies.  Instructor will supply a Materials Handout Kit to each student.  A Materials Fee of $30 is payable to instructor in class.

Sat, Feb. 6, 2016 – 10am – 5pm –Fruit Portraits in Colored Pencil 

The study of Fruit & Nuts, or Pomological Art, began in the late 1700’s. Since then many famous Pomological Artists have contributed volumes of glorious fruit portraits.  Learn the techniques that develop fullness and roundness of these subjects as revealed by the Masters of Pomological Art and create your own fruit plant portrait! Bring your own Colored Pencils, or Watercolor if you prefer. Fruit, Drawing Materials & Paper provided by Instructor, together with Material Handouts. $25 Fee is payable to instructor in class.

Sat, Feb. 20, 2016  – 10am – 5pm – Orchids Up Close & Personal

“The Orchid industry is growing at a rate faster than world economy.” J. Beckner, Botanist. 

In the world of orchids so many families offer a delightful array of shapes and colors.  Students will work closely with an Orchid Flower, dissect and draw it to develop illustrations with extraordinary detail similar to those of the famed Bauer Brothers whose expertise became their hallmark and their calling card for collections of work. Microscopes will be available as well as drawing materials.  Students are to bring one orchid plant with several blooms.  Drawing Materials & Handouts provided by Instructor. Student may want to bring colored pencils, or watercolor & brushes. Materials Fee of $25 is payable to instructor in class.

Mon-Wed, Mar. 21-23, 2016 -Noon-5pm – Leaf Workshop – Drawing & Watercolor

“Leaves have been subjected to more bad treatment by the draughtsman

than perhaps any other portion of the vegetable kingdom…” W. H. Fitch.

Understand how leaf characteristics define plant families and how the Master’s executed beautiful leafs in their paintings. Work from live specimens to create your own masterpiece in graphite, colored pencil, or watercolor. Bring colored pencils or watercolor supplies.  A selection of leaves, paper, and other materials provided.

Materials Fee of $30 is payable to instructor in class.

Mon-Friday, April 11-15, 2016 – Noon-5pm – From Field Sketch to Plant Portrait

As nature lovers, walk into the footsteps of our predecessors and discover how to illustrate plants from our field exploration. Photograph, sketch, and take color samples to develop your personal Field Sketch Book, or use your discoveries to create a plant portrait in Graphite or Watercolor! Bring your camera and watercolor supplies. Drawing materials and other handouts provided by Instructor.  Materials Fee of $35 is payable to instructor in class.

Students enthralled by the beauty of watercolor appearing like classical oil paintings will delight in the techniques used by Botanical Art Masters of the Renaissance and French Court Period. Students will concentrate on one subject to develop watercolor skills in the classical tradition. Learn the importance of smooth paint application that develops form, and glazing techniques that develop color. No experience is necessary. Students may work on their original drawings or copy from one of the master works supplied.  Students will please bring watercolor paints and brushes.
